El Pasoans Should Avoid The Ruidoso Area As Wildfire Burns On Three Rivers Fire According to forestry officials, the fire broke out on Monday near the Three Rivers Campground, spreading almost to Ski Apache and into the Big Bonito area. Overnight into Tuesday, the fire doubled in size, spreading across 12,000 acres onto Mescalero Apache Tribal Land. Last night the crew got some help thanks to Mother Nature as snow and rain fell in the area and are expecting more of the same conditions throughout today. Over 200 crew personnel have been onsite attempting to extinguish the flames and are set to receive additional resources to help combat the fire.

Three Rivers Fire NM update: 5% contained, at 12,000 acres

12:45 p.m. update: Fire is still 12,000 acres and 5% contained.  The Type-1 Incident Management Team took command of the fire at 6 a.m. Crews have been divided into three divisions and will be focusing on constructing fire line on the south end of the fire, working their way to the east and north, a Lincoln National Forest update states. The southeastern portion of the fire is in particularly rough terrain, making firefighter’s work even more challenging for every mile of fire line they build. Despite harsh conditions, this area remains a top priority because of the multiple values at risk ahead of the fire, including homes and Ski Apache.

Precipitation Aids Lincoln County Firefighting Efforts

Cooler temperatures and precipitation moved into the area earlier than forecasted and is dropping rain and snow on parts of the fire this morning. Temperatures and wind are expected to pick up this afternoon, which will cause fire activity to increase once again. A Type-1 Incident Management Team will be briefed this afternoon and take command of the fire tomorrow morning. Today fire crews are working to secure the south side of the fire with direct fire line construction. Crews are also scouting the north and eastern perimeter of the fire for optimal locations to construct fire line.  Firefighters will be doing point protection and structure protection for critical areas.

The Three River Fire has spread to 4000 acres, according to officials. (CNN)The Three Rivers Fire has grown from burning 4,000 to 12,000 acres in New Mexico, according to a press release on the New Mexico Fire Information site. As of late Tuesday local time, the fire, which is burning about 60 miles northeast of White Sand National Park and about three hours south of Albuquerque, was five percent contained. The fire started ½ a mile north of Three Rivers Campground and has spread almost to Ski Apache and into the South Fork Bonito area, the release said. The fire is being driven by steep terrain and extreme fire weather conditions, including gusty winds and low humidity levels around 8 percent, the release said.
