Myanmar authorities open fire on protesting medics

MYANMAR’S security forces opened fire on protesting health workers today and arrested leading figures of the movement  against the February 1 military coup, which has suffered more than 700 deaths since the junta seized power. Wai Moe Naing was reportedly taken into custody after being rammed off his motorbike as he led a rally in the town of Monya, 435 miles north of the largest city Yangon. Footage showed a black car careering into a convoy of motorcycles and abducting the 25-year-old, who has emerged as one of the most prominent figures of the protest movement. Fellow protest leader Tayzar San vowed that they would not be deterred by the crackdown.

Opponents of a 1 February coup that ousted an elected government led by Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi have kept up their campaign against the military this traditional New Year week with marches and various other displays of resistance. Our brother Wai Moe Naing was arrested. His motorbike was hit by an unmarked police car, Win Zaw Khiang, a member of a protest organising group, said on social media.

Breaking News | Leader of anti-military protests arrested in Myanmar

Views: Visits 13 The military in Myanmar has arrested an important leader of the anti-coup protests, local media reported and witnesses confirmed to dpa on Thursday. According to the reports, Wai Moe Naing was taking part in a motorcycle strike in the northern city of Monywa on Thursday, when a car purposefully hit his motorbike, after which he was arrested. Wai Moe Naing is one of the three leading figures of the protests against the military junta, alongside Ei Thinzar Maung from Yangon, the largest city, and Tayzar San from Mandalay. The witness, a protester who asked to remain anonymous, said Wai Moe Naing had always been careful to avoid being arrested.
