French MPs vote to enshrine abortion right in constitution

France's lower house of parliament overwhelmingly approved Tuesday a measure to inscribe abortion as a "guaranteed freedom" in the constitution, a pledge made by President Emmanuel Macron last year. The government chose the term "guaranteed freedom" to thread a needle between the lower house, which earlier voted to enshrine the "right" to an abortion, and the Senate, which is dominated by centre-right parties and which so far has approved only "freedom" for abortion.

Earlier this month, contrary to normal practice, Trong, 79, had not been included in official schedules of meetings held with Vietnam's leaders by visiting Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Laos' Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. Trong has been at the helm of the ruling Communist Party since 2011 and holds the top job in Vietnam's one-party political system.
