SANEF condemns political interference in news rooms
SANEF has condemned news room interference by politicians and called for media freedom and independence ahead of World Press Freedom Day
The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) has called on political leaders to stop interfering in newsroom matters. The organisation said it is concerned about the continued utterances from senior political leaders naming journalists and interfering in the operations of newsrooms which are the heart of the media freedom bulwark.
In a statement released on Sunday, 2 May, SANEF said it is critical for political parties to maintain an arms-length approach when dealing with the media, especially since the country prepares for the upcoming local government elections.
