well, good evening, everyone, i m erin burnett, and outfront tonight, show me your papers. show them to me. four simple words, that mean a lot tonight in arizona and around the world. depending on how you look at it or whose spin you believe, the supreme court s ruling today on the controversial arizona immigration law gave both sides reason to declare victory. the president came out and said he s pleased with the ruling because after all, the justices said the federal government not individual states has the sole power to enforce laws against illegal immigration. the court struck down three provisions of arizona s law. arresting someone without a warrant requiring people to carry i.d., and criminalizing the work of undocumented workers. but here s the rub, the justices upheld something crucial. requiring police to determine immigration status during a lawful stop. in other words, well, show me your papers. and if you re saying that sort of contradicts not carrying an i.d
out front tonight, chaos in cairo. a spunning move by mubarak era judges today who declared parliament illegitimate and the military announced it was over. the same parliament egyptians have spent months voting for in their first votes ever. one tweet from a human rights activist said, egypt just witnessed the smoothest military coup. chaos erupted in the streets of cairo and tahrir square as people gathered. it comes just two days ahead of the presidential election. now this election pits a mubarak loyalist that the military supports against a muslim brotherhood candidate. that it doesn t. it doesn t seem to be a cowibs dense that the brotherhood was the single biggest party in the parliament dissolved today. how did america get egypt so wrong? i remember being in cairo covering the revolution not even 18 months ago. it was inspiring and it was uplifting. it was a moment i ll never forget. president obama, like so many other americans, was moved. by a revolution that topplel
every day about 1.5 million americans board airplanes. this morning they have a big question. is it safe to fly? no doubt there s good reason for that concern. this new plot centered around a nonmetallic explosive designed to slip through airport detectors similar to a bomb aboard a flight in 2009. a malfunction may be the only reason those passengers survived. the latest plot also targeted an international flight coming into the united states. that was foiled two weeks ago. the investigation is still unfolding. a short time ago we heard from white house chief adviser or counterterrorism. the big question how worried should we be that this bomb and others like it would not be detected by current safeguards. this i.ed was a threat from the standpoint of the design we ve been able to determine and so now we re trying to make sure that we take the measures that we need to to prevent any other type of ied from getting through security procedures. so will ramped up vigilance m
