COVID-19: Edo govt, group extend sensitisation campaign to markets, major streets in Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, Egor

BENIN CITY – The Edo State Government has partnered the Concerned Edo Citizens, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), to increase awareness on safety protocols to check the spread of the second wave of coronavirus (COVID-19) in major areas, markets, event centres and other public spaces in Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha and Egor Local Government Areas of the state. The group, whose campaign kicked off in Oredo LGA, visited Lagos Street, Ibiwe, Igun Street, Sakponba Road, Airport Road, Sapele Road and parts of GRA, Ugbor, and Ugbor-Amagba. Some markets visited include Oba Market; Yanga Market; Oliha Market; Uwa Market; Ekiosa Market; Oka Market and Idogbo Market.

ADVERTISEMENT A Benin-based tailor in his mid-30s, Johnson Eze, on Monday told the Edo State judicial panel of inquiry for victims of SARS and related abuses, how the police arrested him over an allegation that he was gay, tortured and extorted him of N100,000. Mr Eze said he was detained for three days at the Iyekogba Police Station in Benin on the orders of the area commander, Johnson Acha, who he further alleged abused and coerced him to sign a statement prepared by the police. Two other persons, Hyacinth Inhanrebhor and Pascal Omozee, also alleged that they were forced to pay N50,000 and N60,000 respectively by officers who arrested them for allegedly being homosexuals and took them to the same Iyekogba Police Station.
