The reason we have the best Research Universities in the world is that, for some 70 years now, the federal government has invested heavily in research, competitively awarded research grants, which go to faculty members at the university of michigan, the university of virginia, harvard, stanford, and all the other great universities in this country that carry out research. What is the result of that research . A Great Innovation system. Economists now acknowledge that 60 or more of u. S. Economic growth over the past few decades is based on innovation.
