The Berkeley Public Library is among the best of the best.
The Library Journal, a New York-based trade publication for librarians founded in 1876, says Berkeley s public library was one of just two libraries in California worthy of a five-star rating in 2020.
The journal reviewed more than 5,600 public libraries in the United States from data reported in the Institute of Museums and Library Services Public Library Survey. It is a big deal, said Tess Mayer, Berkeley s director of library services. We were only one of two in California to get this. This is a significant number.
