(MENAFN - The Conversation) On Feb. 3, Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair announced that 13 groups had been added to the List of Terrorist Entities . Nine of the groups were jihadist groups. But for many Canadians, the most recognizable group was the Proud Boys , although other groups â particularly Atomwaffen Division and The Base â arguably pose a more virulent threat.
The Proud Boys, founded by Canadian writer Gavin McInnes, rose to prominence as the result of its violent engagement with counter-protesters during the so-called Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville, Va., in August 2017 . As with right-wing extremism more generally, the group, which operates in both Canada and the United States, has continued to rise in stature.
Canada's decision to designate the Proud Boys a terrorist entity could ultimately align the organization with the civil society actors and racialized communities the group so violently decries.

An Egyptian court on Sunday ordered the seizure of assets of 89 members and leaders of the banned Muslim Brotherhood and their transfer to the public treasury.
The Court for Urgent Matters targeted in its verdict former president Mohammed Morsi, Brotherhood’s supreme guide Mohamed Badie, his deputy Khairat al-Shater and former legislator Mohamed Beltagy.
Among the other most prominent jailed figures are preacher Safwat Hegazi, Mufti Abdel Rahman al-Barr, as well as leaders Mohsen Rady, Asaad El Sheikha, and others.
