Careers in nursing fill a growing need in the U.S.

Careers in nursing fill a growing need in the U.S. There are several options beyond a RN if you are considering a nursing career. Stock Photo   Posted5/1/2021 7:00 AM The Florence Nightingale Museum in London has a voice recording of the founder of modern nursing, captured on July 30, 1890, by the Edison Co. As a nurse, it s a thrill for me to hear Florence: When I am no longer even a memory, just a name, I hope my voice may perpetuate the great work of my life. You can hear her at www.florence-nightingale.co.uk   As a nurse during the Crimean War, Florence faced unimaginable hardships. Today s nurses are up against 21st century hardships, including COVID-19 and unrelenting staffing shortages. May is the month when nurses everywhere are recognized for their contributions. In fact, the American Nurses Association has joined the World Health Organization in declaring 2020-2021 the Year of the Nurse.

Take steps now to help a loved one with dementia

Take steps now to help a loved one with dementia People suffering from dementia can experience bouts of anger. Stock Photo   Posted4/18/2021 7:00 AM Millie (not her real name) spent part of her childhood in refugee camps during World War II. Now, at 91, her brain can no longer keep those terrifying memories away because she has advanced dementia. She is the sweetest lady when she meets strangers, but she experiences night terrors. She is physically still very strong, fighting off people she feels are attacking her. Her family reports angry outbursts, attacking caregivers with garden shears and chasing her husband around with a shovel when he tries to bring her back inside. Sometimes she can t sleep for two or three days.
