Senator Gerald Boudreaux Issued a statement on the recent action of the Library Board of Control:
First, I want to commend Mrs. Teresa Elberson on an outstanding professional career spanning over thirty-eight (38) years. Her service in the Lafayette Parish Library System has been duly noted and greatly appreciated.
I also want to applaud and commend Dr. Joseph Savoie and the entire faculty at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Are there opposing views to voting rights history in the United States? According to some Board members of the Lafayette Parish Library in Louisiana, there are, and by not presenting opposing sides, the library isn’t serving its patrons well.
Teresa Elberson, a long-time employee of the Lafayette Parish library and current system director, stepped down from her post suddenly on Friday, January 29, following a clash with the library board. Members of the board believed that speakers she’d lined up to discuss a history of voting rights with her community were too “far left” and did not represent the community at large.
Teresa Elberson, director of the Lafayette Parish public library system, retired suddenly Friday, days after library board members criticized the selection of speakers they dubbed too far left for a book discussion on the history of voting rights.
A native of Springfield, Missouri, Elberson moved to Lafayette in 1982 and worked for the library system for more than 38 years. She was appointed director in July 2016 when longtime director Sona Dombourian retired. Ms. Elberson did a great job of continuing the construction of libraries that started with boards going back to the early 2000s, Andrew Duhon, a former library board member and former board president, said Saturday. She led us through a tumultuous time. She s now earned a well-deserved retirement.
