situation will continue, a country that simply doesn t have enough homes to meet demand, where tens and tens of thousands of houses lay empty and unused. stephen murphy, sky news. now, the russian invasion of ukraine has led to rising costs of fertilizer animal feed and fuel which are affecting farmers and are set to be passed on to consumers. there is a warning that increases in food prices are inevitable, as production costs soar due to the war in ukraine, comes as farmers warn that the impact on their industry has been seismic. joining me now is john hughes a farm manager in greenville. john, thanks so much for talking to me this morning. how exactly does this work? for people who have no idea about farming and the food chain, how does russia invading ukraine mean that our food prices go up? well, basically it s had a very direct hit on input prices. so fertilizer, seed, diesel, as
that it is what it is, that the united states will have to continue to coordinate, work with, respect, not trust but do everything else with a group that, you know, terrorist group? well, i agree. it s inevitable. it exactly what we should do. i wouldn t use the word respect but i d say deal with because look, they re the power on the ground. they will have control over highways, roads, police, all that kind of thing and the united states also had a lot of leverage. the taliban is in a difficult position as attacks make clear and a difficult position economically. there is no money in the country and they need to pay government salaries. the united states can ask for things in return like the safe passage of the americans and most importantly, the afghans left behind. there are very few americans left behind but tens and tens of thousands of afghans. the americans should get out first. that s the priority. you cannot leave behind tens of
10,000 of them may not have an exit out. in addition, you have tens and tens of thousands more afghan allies who also cannot find a way out. what are you learning? what can be done to get those folks to safety as the u.s. has promised them? thank you so much, brianna. and this is a very dire situation in many ways, it s an emergency. so we have to use all of our tools to make sure each and every american, each and every afghan ally get out or evacuated and we must do this quickly. no one expected and i think the president laid it out, the taliban would rush on and take over kabul ain such a short period of time. having said that s correct we have to use every tool we have to ensure their safety. it has to be orderly. we have to expedite these special american visas. we ve been working on this for months now. i chaired the subcommittee on appropriations which appropriates much of the funds that we need.
victories here and there but you re not going to be the future of the party necessarily. so 2022 is still a while off, but hey, we re in washington so we start talking about this stuff early. we ve had a couple of bellwether elections, chantal brown beating nina turner and eric adams, a moderate beating out two other progressives in that race there. is it safe to say that the more moderate wing to some degrees that has the upper hand right now. what we call a moderate in new york city is far left everywhere else in the country. what is considered moderate is to change and reform the police department as opposed to defunding it. what we call moderate in new york is finding ways to house tens and tens of thousands of people as opposed to, you know, sort of doing nothing at all
