About 3. 5 years researching, teaching myself this history, and finding the objects. We have 124 objects. There are 63 portraits. Commemorate the 19th amendment and tell the history of the 19th amendment and how women lobbied to get this amendment passed in ratified. It also ask questions about and what does it do and what does it not do. Anothers considered part two of the 19th amendment. I will take you through the exhibition and show you a few of the objects that tell the history. Lets go. We are in the first gallery of the exhibition. We have portraits that guide the narrative. I wanted to include pieces of art. Like the one we are looking at. It is by a female artist. In 1860s and i wanted to include this painting because it portrays Young Children you have four kids the kids are celebrating and the mother is reading the new york times. House. Tonight is one of the annual National Heritage lectures that we do in partnership with the u. S. Capitol Historical Society and the u. S. Supreme court Historical Society. We have our wonderful colleagues from both here tonight and Jane Campbell is the new president of the capitol Historical Society. On june 4, 1919, the 19th amend was passed and sent to the states for ratification. The suffragists used the white house to bring attention to their cause. Tonight we look forward to hearing more about their successful efforts to secure womens right to vote. Before i introduce our speaker, i have a couple other introductions and things to share. And it is a lenticular, which has a special effect so that as you walk by the image changes between the two. And we really wanted to have it in the exhibit to help grab the publics attention, and also to signal that this is a historic exhibit, but one that continues to have contemporary relevance today. So lets head now into the lawrence f. Obrien gallery, where rightfully hers is on display. So this is a National Archives exhibition to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, but it is more than a 19th amendment exhibition. Thats because the 19th amendment, landmark Voting Rights victory that it was for women, did not give all women the right to vote. Millions of women were already voters by the time the 19th amendment was added to the constitution, but millions of women for reasons other than their sex remained unable to vote. Its my privilege to welcome you, many of you back to historic deindicate historic Decatur House and another one of our wonderful lectures.
