Airports receive more grant funds

Several area airports received a share of $2 million in new grants for specific projects from the State Aeronautical Board on Thursday. Money for the projects, which were in matching grants, stem from aviation fuel tax revenues and through the American Rescue Plan approved by Congress last month as part of its COVID-19 relief funding. “The 100% federal airport grant share contained in the plan allowed us to further leverage Aeronautics Division funding to support more airports across our state, from Delta to Walden to Lamar,” said Shoshana Lew, executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation. The grants, which range from $25,000 to $400,000, went for such things as airfield repaving, maintenance, reconstruction and snow removal equipment.

Skier takes 2,000-foot fall on Colorado fourteener

San Miguel County Sheriff deputies were called to the Wilson Peak area near Telluride following the report of a skier-involved accident. It was discovered that a 37-year-old male from New Mexico had taken a fall while skiing the north face of Wilson Peak, resulting in a 2,000-foot tumble down the mountain. The skier was with a partner at the time, though the accident carried him out of view after the accident occurred near the top of the mountain. Because of this, the partner was unsure of the fallen skier s status. The skier was soon located and it was determined that air rescue would be needed. The skier was flown via helicopter to Telluride Regional Airport with multiple traumatic injuries. He was then taken to the Telluride Medical Center. Though traumatic and severe, his injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
