Health Ministry: At least 22 Covid-19 cases identified as variants of concern

The three variants, which the ministry have categorised as “variants of concern” (VOC), are those that are said to be more contagious than usual - based on studies conducted worldwide. “As of April 14, the Institute of Medical Research has conducted analysis on 273 whole genome sequences of the Covid-19 virus taken from clinical samples. “About 145 genome sequences were conducted this year. “Of that total, 22 cases (15.2%) were found to be of the VOC type, ” said Dr Noor Hisham in his daily Covid-19 statement. The first VOC to be detected in Malaysia were the B.1.1.7 variant from the UK, which was found on Feb 3, following tests conducted on individuals arriving in the country.

Covid-19: 2,253 cases, 11 deaths

26 Feb 2021 / 19:56 H. PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry has reported 2,253 new Covid-19 cases today, which brings the total number of cases recorded in the country to 295,951 to date with 27,994 being active cases. Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement today that out of the total, seven were imported transmissions involving three Malaysians and four foreigners. Selangor had the most cases today with 633, followed by Perak with 545 cases. Johor reported 276 cases, Sarawak (250), Sabah (129), Kuala Lumpur (122), Penang (93), Kelantan (73), Negri Sembilan (68), Kedah (25), Pahang (21), Malacca (13), Perlis (four) and Terengganu with one case. Putrajaya and Labuan were the only states that did not report any new Covid-19 cases today.
