strong areas that have withstood that impact and energy. rene marsh says investigators want to map pieces of the wreckage. when we put up that graphic of the wreckage with circles, is that sort of what they ll do? it is. what we can do with this is this is hikely going to be what we call virtual investigation. you remember the previous accidents like flight 800, it was all reconstructed. they can do that now. that technology wasn t around in flight 800. les, you were involved in that investigation. during the time when you are trying to put it together it s painstakingly accurate as to where everything is. if this is well mapped which we can do with gps now to the nearly inch of where these landed and calculate that and figure out latitude of the aircraft when it hit the hillside and it also will give you reference for impact and what we call recoil from the accident site. that recoil can come back and you can calculate just exactly
with hunter walker. nice to have you with us. thanks for having me. do you think that she opted for convenience, do you think it passes the sniff test? because a lot of folks would say, the clintons are very careful and strategic about every decision they make including likely on the way they handle e-mail? and just little details like would it be so hard to get all of your e-mails to one device? maybe the technology wasn t there but people today are able to manage that feat? absolutely. i don t think this makes sense to a lot of people. and more and more americans have one or two devices? i have two laptops. one for work and one at home. so her defense that she needed to only have one, and she had to set up this whole system to avoid juggling two blackberries for someone as high-powered as her doesn t seem plausible. apple loves you. and what you are saying might be true and how people feel about it. on the substance it is
shoot them down, focusing on ones that appear to be headed towards civilian populations. jenna: as you point out if the technology wasn t there this would be a very different conflict we would see deaths obviously on both sides. where do you think this goes from here? what will you be watching to see if it gets bigger than it already is? so far we ve seen the united states offer to broker this. this really has fallen on deaf ears over there in the middle east. we ve heard talks of perhaps the egyptians brokering a cease-fire but egyptians and hamas don t get along terribly well right now. what is interesting we re hearing calls for turkey or qatar to broker a cease-fire. this is very ironic because both of these countries are sponsors of hamas. i don t see how they would be able to do this with any credibility. and so i, it is quite possible that this thing drags on for another couple days or perhaps even longer. jenna: if that is the case, what is the appropriate foal for the role
it s unfortunate to have crashed, some pieces will be visible. even to track airplanes in flight, when you get a big enough constellation of satellites they will see. has to be daylight, of course, it s not perfect or magic. still, it s a greatly increased capability to under the surface of the world. sometimes we get a lot of amazing images from space. when we look at things like power outages or even forest fires or hurricanes, is there anything that exists in space now? i know the technology wasn t really ready yet for this, that could help us with the search for the plane? everybody has been using everything that exists. i m not responsible for it all but i know the guys on the space station. the camera straight down at the world taking pictures of specific areas after a hurricane or big storm. i know the guys up there taking pictures of this area. it s just such a huge area. the pieces or target we re
they failed. they were plugging in the wrong numbers. they weren t calculating it right. they spent two years looking in the wrong stretch. they recalculated using a new kind of math and found it within a week. besides being great at math, what do they need? i mean, what kind of equipment will they use? are we talking submarines, explorer vessels? in air france 447 they were able to use for the first time a new kind of high-tech underwater autonomous vehicle, basically a robot sub that could on its own navigate under water, go along a straight line and when they get to a mountain range it was a very mountainous stretch of ocean, go up, down, follow the contours. because you need to be close to the seabed you re scanning to get a good high res image. the previous technology wasn t able to get that close. so we ll be able to use that kind of technology and presumably find it a lot faster. here s the question, who has that technology? the malaysians have already said we don t have
