UK and Australia Collaborate on World First Space Bridge
Australia and the United Kingdom (UK) space agencies have strengthened their ties further by signing the worlds first “Space Bridge” arrangement to increase connection, exchange, and investment.
Minister for Industry, Science, and Technology Karen Andrews said the arrangement the two countries signed in Canberra and London on Feb. 23 will connect Australian and UK expertise in the space industry and showcase the strength of Australia’s space sector.
“Australia’s space industry is innovative, globally competitive and growing at a rapid pace,” Andrews said in a media release.
“In addition to Australia’s strong manufacturing capabilities, our space priorities range from communications to Earth observation, as well as robotics and automation all of which can offer support to the UK’s space ambitions.”
Building a ‘Space Bridge’ between the UK and Australia
The UK Space Agency calls it a ‘Space Bridge’, between the UK and Australia to form “a partnership to increase knowledge exchange and investment across the two countries’ space sectors”.
Announcing the agreement, the UK Science Minister Amanda Solloway said:
“The signing of today’s Space Bridge partnership, a world’s first, with one of our closet international allies, is another step forward in our ambition for the UK to become a globally-competitive space power.”
“The bond will allow our most innovative space businesses and universities to collaborate and share best practice more effectively than ever. I’m excited to see how this partnership will unlock new space jobs in both.”
Space Bridge Helps UK, Australia Get Ahead in Global Space Race
The world’s first Space Bridge will unlock improved access to trade, investment and academic research opportunities, better advice to businesses and innovative bilateral collaborations. The UK and Australia share future ambitions for space and have similar plans to increase the size and job creation potential of the sector. This agreement will further develop the longstanding relationship between the two countries which dates back to the 1970s when the Prospero satellite built in Farnborough, UK, launched from Woomera, South Australia.
