teacher walkout enters its third day. arizona teachers are some of the lowest paid in the country. with an average salary of a little more than 47,000 bucks. many of the teachers marching insist their walkout is about much more than their salaries. they also want more funding and smaller class sizes. they want to be able to do their jobs. you know what their jobs are? to educate the next generation of what i believe are great americans. for more, i m joined by nbc s steve patterson on the scene in phoenix. steve, go through what the latest is. because it s not just teachers that are marching. you ve got the parents of these students. they re saying our education system is crumbling because there s not enough money. yes, stephanie, this is when things truly get interesting. you re talking about day three of this walkout. week two, for thousands of teachers affected. thousands of students affected. this will be a sea of red in just a few hours. you can see some of the teachers starting
roots. but you saw a willing willingness for them to go to the pole on the special election and soet vote for the democrat. debbie lesko had been in the state legislature for nine years. there s a teacher walkout on thursday. and so if you re a member that is running for congress, a lot of these things are coming down to these local issues. so, yes, donald trump is part of this, but it s more than boots on the ground from super pacs and more than rnc television ads in the is going to come down to those issues and whether republicans are able to take their own initiative in these states. running on a trump agenda, i don t think is enough. and debbie lesko, that five-point margin can attest to that. thank you, my friend. i appreciate it. we are watching capitol hill just behind us this morning where any many french president emmanuel macron is set to arrive and speak before congress and on the table, talk on the iran nuclear deal. we herd president trump acknowledge thalg may be a ne
been from republicans. 23 % for independents. as we learned from alabama in 2018, numbers don t mean everything. these are two republicans we ve talked to just this morning. i voted for the democratic candidate. usually vote democrat? no. i registered republican. lesko seemed more of a trump supporter than one who wanted to get things down in congress. reporter: who did you vote for and why? debbie. overall, i m very much a republican. have been a republican my whole life, essentially. believe in all the principles they re putting in place and believe debbie supports all that. reporter: that first woman you heard from, jerry nelson, a long-time republican. she s like a lot of others we ve talked to in this district. in the background of this election this week is a teacher walkout that s going to be taking place on thursday. lesko is well known to be a sponsor of legislation for the vouchers which would take public
your students on the way to the food pantry, being humiliated as a teacher, degreed teacher, this is the governor s response to the teacher s outcry. teachers want more but it s kind of like having a teenage kid that wants a better car. your response, senator pittman? yes, thank you for having me. i appreciate the opportunity to speak out. yes, the governor of oklahoma has said it very clear and cloudily, sent a message to all of our constituents by saying businesses don t want to come here and in order for us to promote business in oklahoma, we must have an educated work force. and so it s unfortunate that our governor doesn t respect the profession of education. so i encourage the teacher walkout. this is the sixth day we ve had this happen. we ve lost over $180 million over the last ten years. it s time for us to stand up, walk out, speak up for children.
