KOTA KINABALU: The two Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders captured while hiding out in the swamp area of Sabah s south-western Beaufort district have been described as ruthless by the Philippines military.
The duo – Sansibar Bensio and Mabar Binda – have been involved in clashes with the Philippines military over the past decade that saw them beheading a marine as well as killing a kidnapped Dutch national.
Rewards have been offered by Manila leading to the capture of both men, believed to be key fighters of the notorious Abu Sayyaf group led by Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan based in the southern Philippines islands of Jolo.

By the first quarter of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had created conditions for greater population control and surveillance, allowing Southeast Asian states seeking to dismantle terror groups (TG) the opportunity to do so. While the pandemic had forced TGs to cease high-intensity operations (HIO), they were able to reconsolidate capabilities for such operations in the future.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo R. Duterte has ordered the suspension of all mining on an island in Tawi-Tawi, within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, a cabinet official said Tuesday.
The President issued the order following reports that Tumbagaan Island in Lunguyan, Tawi-Tawi has been “completely devastated as a result of mining operations,” Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei B. Nograles said at a televised briefing.
He said Mr. Duterte brought up the state of mining on the island, a source of nickel, during a Cabinet meeting on Monday night in Malacañang.
“The island at this point has been mined out. And while rehabilitation efforts are underway, the President is issuing a directive to stop any and all mining operations in Tumbagaan island,” he said.
