Herbalists demand MP seat, ministry

Daily Monitor Wednesday March 10 2021 Summary Traditional healers under their association, the National Traditional Healers and Herbalists organisation, are demanding representation in Parliament, claiming they have been left out in most government programmes. They say their issues are not well debated by legislators which have reportedly excluded them from government programmes like Operation Wealth Creation, National Agriculture Advisory Services (Naads), Prosperity for All and Emyoga, among others. Mr Godfrey Kayizi, the spokesperson of the association, in a press conference on Monday said if they get a representative in Parliament, the sector will also improve. “We have native herbalists who know herbal drugs which can treat epidemic diseases but because of lack of representation in Parliament, they are not recognised,’’ he said.

Sugarcane growing threat to environment - experts Friday March 05 2021 Summary Records from Busoga Sugarcane Out growers Association (BSGA) indicate that the sub-region has 30,000 largescale farmers supplying five factories. Advertisement Experts have warned that sugarcane growing in Busoga Sub-region could become an environmental threat due to the massive deforestation. Records from Busoga Sugarcane Out growers Association (BSGA) indicate that the sub-region has 30,000 largescale farmers supplying five factories. Mr Moses Maganda, the Jinja District environment officer, on Wednesday said the area is one of the regions with the highest deforestation activities due to sugarcane growing. “Busoga is the only sub-region that has many factories that process sugar, and this has created a high demand for sugarcane forcing farmers to clear  trees hence degrading the environment, he said.
