Tairawhiti Joins Voyage To National Waka Hourua Festival In Tauranga

Te Hau Kōmaru hosted in Tauranga later this month. Tairawhiti Voyaging Trust chair Herewini Te Koha says voyaging together is a significant part of waka tradition both here in Aotearoa and across Moana Nui a Kiwa. “Our crew have been preparing for this voyage which extends their knowledge as kau moana sailors and connects them to the wider waka whānau. On this day 150 years ago, the seeds were planted for Tauranga Library by three men at the Masonic Hotel who wanted to provide reading material to locals. There were less than 250 households at the time, road transport was powered by horse or donkey, and the few roads that weren t dirt were made of pipi shell.
