The United States has made considerable progress in its war touproot Osama bin Laden's terrorist network and the Taliban regimethat protects it in Afghanistan. However, the challenge forWashington will be to turn the rout of the Taliban into a decisivemilitary victory and then ensure that the post-war politicalstructure that emerges prevents Islamic extremists such as theTaliban and bin Laden from returning to roost in Afghanistan.
