to cross the runway and the takeoff clearance, the pilots did the right thing, but there s a problem with the controllers that perhaps, maybe perhaps a training controller might have actually given the wrong clearance or the airplane across the runway when it shouldn t have. you could hear from the chaos, there was a lot going on in that control tower. appeared i heard three or four voices on there. normally two, a ground controller and the controller who controls the flights in the air for takeoff and landing. but that third voice that we heard on there indicates that maybe there was a trainee or they were training somebody on that position. neil: so who would be the voice or which would be the voice that says stop, stop? that would be the authority? you know, it almost seemed like the supervisor. neil: right. or a combination of. they re up there in that cab together. so it could have been one of a number of individuals who actually saw what was going on
as runway incursions. this is the seventh such case as a major airport we ve seen since the start of this year. this one is interesting because it involves this private jet as it was coming in to land at san diego international as this southwest airlines flight, a 737, was told to pull on the runway and stand by for takeoff clearance. what s so interesting is the faa now tells us the air traffic controller in the tower cab heard alarms sound warning of a potential collision and told that private jet to go around, abort the landing and come back to land later on. now we re finding out from air traffic control audio where the private jet pilot noticed this collision was imminent as well. you can listen here. verify you re still clear to land? say again.
The National Transportation Safety Board on Thursday cited the failure of a charter pilot to get a takeoff clearance in a February incident in Boston that resulted in a near-collision with a JetBlue flight. JetBlue Flight 206 that was about to land from Nashville was forced to perform a go-around because Hop-a-Jet flight 280 took off without clearance on intersecting runway, the NTSB said. The board said the airport surface detection equipment issued an alert, and the air traffic controller issued go-around instructions to the JetBlue flight.
