Piedmont Wind Symphony chooses veteran conductor and wind music scholar as its new music director and conductor

The board of directors of the Piedmont Wind Symphony in Winston-Salem recently hired Mark A. Norman as the organization’s music director and conductor. He replaces Matthew Troy, who left the position in early 2020 to lead the Western Piedmont Symphony in Hickory. Norman has more than 30 years of experience as a conductor and tuba performer. He has been working closely with the Piedmont Wind Symphony on a recording project since late 2020, but his first day on the job as music director/conductor was Feb. 26. He is also director of Instrumental Ensembles and a conducting faculty artist at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

Anya Pogorelova – Bands at the Conservatory

a.pogorelova@mail.umkc.edu Anya Pogorelova is a pianist, percussionist, and music educator originally from Saratov, Russia. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting at UMKC Conservatory. Anya holds a Master of Music in Conducting from Georgia State University, where she studied with Robert J. Ambrose and Chester B. Phillips; and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with high honours from the University of Saskatchewan. Prior to studying at UMKC, Anya was the Director of Bands at Bishop Lloyd Middle School in Lloydminster, Alberta. In that position, Anya worked with over 300 students across 4 concert bands, 2 jazz ensembles, and drumline. While at Georgia State University, Anya served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Wind Orchestra, and Concert Band; taught basic and instrumental conducting courses; and assisted with the 225-member marching band.
