The Cross, in Oakenshaw, was severely damaged yesterday morning after a collision involving a HGV. The stone structure, which is situated at the junctions of Cross Street, Sykes Lane and Wyke Lane, is Grade-II listed and more than 300 years old. It had stood the test of time until Tuesday when the impact with the lorry caused part of the bottom of the structure to completely come away from the main body. Rather than stop though, the HGV continued on its way. Ashley D Carrion was right behind the large vehicle when the collision happened. She said: I was driving down Wyke Lane towards Oakenshaw.
