The L.A. school district implemented four “acceleration days” for their students that aimed to fill the gaps in student learning, exacerbated by the pandemic. But less than 8 percent attended and the overall cost of these sessions remains unclear.
L.A. Unified worked to make optional "acceleration days" work for students and help them raise grades. But most students opted for a full spring break instead.
Researchers say that regular tutoring sessions, either one-on-one or in very small groups, multiple times a week and built into the school day are the best way to help students catch up after pandemic disruptions. Such sessions are now underway in Portland Public Schools, with a focus on literacy for third, fourth and fifth graders.
