We are joining you live from the auditorium of the state Historical Society in iowa and we are in des moines. With us today are more than 200 students from schools across this state, we are joined online by students in classrooms across the country. Say hello everybody. applause in december 1965 mary beth and john tinker along with their friend Chris Eckhart wore black bands to school to protest the war in vietnam they were sent home and suspended from school. The students were told they couldnt return to school until they agreed to end their protest. Through their parents, the Students School sued the School District for violating their right to free expression.
