america this weekend. kasie hunt picks up our coverage right now. good afternoon. i m kasie hunt here in washington. we re going to begin with the scramble for answers after a u.s. fighter jet were scrambled three days in a row this weekend, shooting down three separate aerial objects that were flying over north america. in just moments, the white house is going to take questions on this deepening national security mystery, as president biden faces increasing pressure to address the nation to explain what exactly is going on and who is behind these incursions. we re going to bring you that white house briefing as soon as it gets under way. but we want to get started right now with cnn s kylie atwood and phil mattingly, who are tracking all of this. kylie, let me start with you at the state department. so much of this is going to depend on what the government recovers from what is shot down. what is the status of this? if they haven t determined the origins of these objects,
impact on the ground. when the chinese foreign ministry indicated that they would respond in the way they were prepared to. and it turns out the other objects are chinese origin, is there a menu of options prepared for how we deal with that? terrific hypothetical. we re just not there yet. on to the relationship issue, the chinese spy balloon, you got china buying more oil from russia. you got china opening up cases in u.s. technology from u.s. universities. and president xi is going to be meeting with the president. and at what point does the president ask for a call from president xi? again, i don t have a call to talk about today. again, let me say here, i know i m running close on time, sorry no, it s not your fault. the president met with president xi at balanci. at the g20, the whole purpose was to move the relationship. the most consequential bilateral relationship in the world, the president knows that. and he wanted to move that forward. and secretary
type of significant intelligence collecting capability or what they might have been intended for. at this white house briefing, what you did hear from national security spokesman john kirby is there is clearly a shift into a robust, all-of-government approach to get more answers, not just to the three objects shot down over the course after a three-day period but what they re seeing in the skies. the widening of the apertures, it s at least one element of why we ve seen this more over the course of the past couple days. as you noted, victor, this is unprecedented in terms of u.s. fighters taking out things from over u.s. skies. this is john kirby s response. where we go from here, i think we just don t know right now in terms of whether they needs to be threshold changes as you put it. i think it s important to take a step back here. what the president did was ordered these actions with the safety and security of the american people foremost in his mind. there were very goo
he s in brussels at the nato defense minister s meeting. we ll get that on air momentarily. the white house saying there s no u.s. surveillance aircraft in chinese airspace. some careful wording perhaps in that statement from john kirby at the white house despite china s insistence that we have been doing surveillance in their airspace. they said there s been ten balloons in their airspace. that idea was vehemently denied by admiral kirby just moments ago from the white house. despite the fact, remember this navy video. there s this discussion about extra terrestrials, what are these things. i ll take you back to this video that was released in april of 2020. what is that little white floating thing that they called a tic tac at that time. now we go back to these videos. raises a lot of questions about what is up there, what is out there. they see no evidence that these aerial objects are alien or extra terrestrial bodies. meanwhile, communications with china have gone cold f
