The latest technological advancements in the domain of virtual reality (VR) have created new opportunities to use VR as a training platform for medical students and practitioners more broadly. Despite the growing interest in the use of VR as a training tool, a commonly identified gap in VR-training for medical education is the confidence in the long-term validity of the applications. A systematic literature review was undertaken to explore the extent of VR (in particular head-mounted displays) applications for medical training with an additional focus on validation measures. The papers included in this review discussed empirical case studies of specific applications; however, these were mostly concerned with human–computer interaction and were polarized between demonstrating that a conceptual technology solution was feasible for simulation or looked at specific areas of VR usability with little discussion on validation measures for long-term training effectiveness and outcomes. Medivis recently raised $20 million in a Series A funding round that included investments from Mayo Clinic, Bob Iger and Kevin Durant. The New York City-based company's technology can be thought of as a “virtual GPS system” for surgeons it helps them navigate complex anatomical landscapes during operations and gives them a more accurate, intuitive understanding of the anatomy with which they're dealing.
This 18 March, Group Editor Marty Kauchak completed a wide-ranging virtual interview with Richard Vincent, CEO and co-founder, FundamentalVR. Highlights of their discussion are provided below. FundamentalVR is expanding its Fundamental Surgery platform which permits medical professionals to learn and rehearse precision surgery skillsets. It is the first SaaS platform to combine VR, haptics, deep data, AI and multimodal learning and provides immersive education simulations that allows users to experience the same, sights, sounds and sensations they would in the real world.
