Stafford supervisors approve Fountain Park apartment and retail development

Stafford supervisors voted 4–3 on Tuesday to rezone a 6-acre parcel at the corner of U.S. 1 and Courthouse Road to become Fountain Park—a new development of apartments and retail stores that will serve as a gateway to what county officials are calling Downtown Stafford. “We’re excited with the opportunity,” said Jeh Hicks, director of community relations for Jarrell Properties of Fredericksburg, which owns the land. “It’s going to be a gathering place where Stafford County residents can meet with their neighbors, their friends, to be able to show off where Stafford County is going.” Supervisor Mark Dudenhefer introduced the motion to approve the deal between the county and Jarrell, which was opposed by Supervisors Gary Snellings, Crystal Vanuch and Meg Bohmke.

Stafford supervisors mull options to help fund road projects

Stafford supervisors are weighing options to fund improvements to the county’s road network. “If we don’t do something about our transportation problems in Stafford County, there’s no reason we should even be here, frankly,” said Supervisor Cindy Shelton. “If I go to my constituents, I know my constituents are going to say they want to spend the money on the transportation projects.” Residents voted on a road bond referendum in 2019 to make safety improvements, and more than 77 percent of supported it. With cost-sharing help from the state, the projects on the county’s list came to $118.3 million and included upgrades at Enon Road at U.S. 1, Shelton Shop Road, Garrisonville Road, Onville Road, Layhill Road at U.S. 1, Leeland Road, Morton Road and Mountain View Road, at Choptank, Stefaniga and Kellogg Mill roads.
