70% turnout for panchayat polls in LWE-affected areas of Visakhapatnam district

No untoward incident reported from any of the mandals The third phase of gram panchayat elections, being held in 11 mandals of Paderu Revenue Division in the Agency areas of Visakhapatnam district, reported 69.28% polling, here on Wednesday. Despite calls given by the banned CPI (Maoist) to boycott the elections, there was a sizable turnout for the polls, and it was conducted peacefully with no untoward incident reported from any of the mandals, said Superintendent of Police B. Krishna Rao. Out of 4.36 lakh voters in 237 gram panchayats, as many as 3.02 lakh voters came forward to cast their votes. Though the polling percentage was just 43.33% by the end of 10.30 a.m., it had gradually increased.

Deepak Rolugunta mandal records highest of 86.61% The second phase of gram panchayat elections being held in 10 mandals of Narsipatnam revenue division recorded 84.03% polling in Visakhapatnam district on Saturday. This was a shade lower than the polling percentage in Anakapalle, which recorded 84.23%. The first phase of gram panchayat elections was held in Anakapalle revenue division on February 9. The polling in Narsipatnam revenue division has been peaceful in all 239 gram panchayats, said Superintendent of Police B. Krishna Rao.

Vinay Chand on Thursday organised a video-conference with officials regarding arrangements for the polls scheduled to be held on February 13, at Narsipatnam revenue division. The Collector asked officials to coordinate with various departments and conduct the elections peacefully. He said that mandal special officers, tahsildars and Mandal Parishad Development Officers (MPDOs) should discharge their election duties properly. The election material should be distributed right from 7 a.m. on Friday, he said, and asked the officials to ensure all basic amenities at the polling centres.

Panchayat polls: DIG, SP inspect sensitive areas

AAA They review security arrangements Deputy Inspector General (Visakha Range) L.K.V. Ranga Rao, Superintendent of Police B. Krishna Rao and other officials visited a few highly-sensitive areas to review the situation ahead of panchayat polls in Anakapalle region in the district on Sunday. The first phase of panchayat elections will be held in Anakapalle mandal on January 9. The SP visited Nagulapalli, Munagapaka, Boulawada and Mamidipalem polling stations, the sensitive areas in Munagapaka mandal. He also inspected the performance of check-posts. Mr. Krishna Rao also interacted with villagers of Bouluwada and Mamidipalem about the situation in their villages. He told them about the election code to be followed and sought their cooperation for the peaceful conduct of polls. Later, Mr. Ranga Rao visited Tummapala village in Anakapalle mandal along with the SP. He enquired about the security arrangements being made for the polls.
