CHARLTON – What is the best age for retirement? According to “guiding light” Clarence A. Bachand, it’s not a day earlier than 98.
Bachand, of Charlton, is a WWII veteran, husband of 78 years, father, community leader and a 53-year contributor to all things at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School.
He retired from his 33-year seat on the school committee that oversees Bay Path in Charlton’s May 1 election.
“I decided not to run for another three-year term because I would be 101 when I retired,” Bachand said while walking into the school Monday for a ceremony honoring his total 53 years of continuous service.

VINCENT General contracts for multiple building projects were awarded during Monday night’s meeting of the Warren Local Schools Board of Education.
Elementary school demolition
A resolution passed awarding contracts for the demolition of Little Hocking and Warren elementaries to Raze International Inc. of Shadyside.
The contract for the Little Hocking school demolition was $325,190, while the former Warren Elementary will be torn down at a cost of $202,190.
“They will start that process Jan. 1. They’ve been on site already getting prepared,” said Superintendent Kyle Newton. “They’re ready to go. I know they’re going to be working on that right away.”

Warren County Health Services Director Ginelle Jones urged people to stop gathering.
âWe are still digging out from Thanksgiving,â she said. âWith the community spread of COVID-19 we are seeing, we should not have gatherings with people from outside our household. We are doing all we can to keep up with this, but we need the public to help us.â

A coronavirus case at Whitehall Elementary School led to everyone learning virtually until Christmas vacation because too many teachers and staff were quarantined, Superintendent Patrick Dee said in a letter to the community.
âWe know the importance of keeping our students in school, however, with the number of elementary school staff and students impacted by contact with the positive individual, we simply have to move to a remote learning model to ensure that all students are receiving instruction,â he wrote.
