LA MESA
La Mesa finally has its long awaited community garden, located in a spot in the hills above downtown.
After years of starts and stops in other places around the city, La Mesa Community Garden at MacArthur Park is scheduled to hold its grand opening and ceremonial first planting at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at 5080 Memorial Drive. The garden has 41 plots, including four that are ADA accessible.
The garden sits near the city’s public swimming pool next to the former site of the clubhouse for Sun Valley Golf Course, which closed in 2017. The city owns the land the golf course leased. It turned the entire 22-acre property into a park, carving out a spot for the garden. It has water-efficient irrigation, free parking and public restrooms on site.
