good comment. first of all, it defines our view of their actions, which relates to our strategic interest. the other thing is what i hope, maybe i m optimistic, that sets the stage for russia to take a different tact on things. does that include, by the way, russian meddling? isn t that destabilizing? no, i don t think it was destabilizing. i think president trump won the election fair and square. it can be two totally different things. meddling in your election, forget the united states, what about france and other countries where russia has been accused of other such things. is that destabilizing? not unless they can prove it did something. trying is what intelligence services do all the time. cyber attacks, like i say, submersion, disinformation. those are the tried and true tactics of intelligence, every country does it.
and confront it and confront it with our allies, western democracy is in very, very serious trouble. so we ve got to stop bickering about this and stop making republican versus democrat issue and we also have to be truthful and the attorney general, senator sessions answering those questions, when he makes a statement that he did not have contact with the russians, he should know better. that statement was not true and that does not help us combat russian submersion if we can t be truthful with each other because of partisan politics, amnesia or whatever else it is. we have a lot of work to do and thus far, it s vladimir putin who is winning. when we come back, this question to jeffrey toobin, why did you have sessions go out of his way to say as i understood and at the time i was telling the truth. that question, jeffrey toobin, next.
that water. so there s a lot of things they could find. it s going to be necessary to link it to farook and his wife. so tom, you said even if there is a hard drive in there, there might be information that could be retrieved. what about the kind of forensic evidence investigators would want associated with any items that could be linked to farook and malik? like fingerprints, would that be something that would still be able to sustain submersion if indeed those items were found there? it s possible. i don t think that s the most important link to lunk a piece of evidence to them specifically. if you find their hard drive it s going to be so uniquely theirs with the websites, the information, the log-in information, that s going to come that will be a digital electronic fingerprint and dna, far more than the actual physical fingerprint. i think what s important here is they don t know all of the applications on the computer they may have used. they don t know all the websites
ten days of submersion? fred, there s really three areas that they re going to have to be concerned with. one, and really the easiest to overcome, is the physical damage of being submerged. and frankly, we re going to need the investigators that are going to be involved in this. they re going to be very experienced. and that s going to be the easy piece. the second piece is going to be if the hard drive has been encrypted. if it s been encrypted, it depends on what type of encryption, the complexity of it. and frankly, if these people didn t have a vast amount of expertise around encryption technology, if they were using basic encryption techniques, federal investigators should have a fairly easy time to overcome that. and the third piece would be if they re using standard what we call data-wiping tools, things like d-band, et cetera. and those, again, federal investigators should have a pretty easy time overcoming that. but, again, in combination of water submersion, encryption, and
across so maybe shiftment of pavement but if this gives way, which it is flooding. that means it s imminent, the communities off to the east are going to be evacuated. there is quite a large community here and reasonable to assume any home around the lake bed will have to evacuate depending on the elevation. now i do want to point out the next problem we re going to be looking at after the historic flooding and amounts of rain 15 to 20 to 26 inches will be the rivers. most of the smaller tributaries are feeding the larger rivers and flow from the forth east to the east. that means communities that have seen the submersion of water will see the river waters rise and the damage they reveal in the days ahead could be c catastrophic and maybe the next billion dollar disaster. some say that s a modest figure. thanks tom for that report.
