i just don t put much stock reading too much into any one day s move in stocks or stock market averages. maybe this chart illustrates my point. the dow over the last month we ve had big up days big down days, yet for all of this we are essentially unchanged this year. in other words if you were to say at this point in the year that we d be flat at this point in the year that s where we are at this point in the year. that is not to say that big swings don t warrant attention, i know this sounds sacrilegious for a nerd no less but i have endured my nearly two decades here at fox. i had a bigger head then, didn t i? even when i hosted a show called market wrap, i rarely led with the markets at all. sure, when they were big days. but not at all on most days. the overwhelming number days i
the federal jobs report due out in two and a half hours. christine romans is here to tell us about it. when you look at the major stock market averages they have had a good year. in fact, just over the past six, eight weeks it s been you would be happy if this was a year return for you. take a look at the dow jones industrial average. it is up huge. this is year to date. you can see here i can t read down there. it s had a nice run. i can t help you either. go to cnn money and take a look to see what it is. the dow is 30 big blue chip stocks. the s&p 500 is more represent of your 401(k). the jobs report today will likely decide whether you see a high again in stocks for today. this is what we expect from the jobs report in two and a half hours. in february, 170,000 jobs created and an unemployment rate ticking down. a lot of discussion about record highs in stocks and still such a
those are the two bright spots in part because the fed is keeping interest rates so low for housing as well. remember about stocks, it s very important. a lot of people say to me, look, why are you guys talking about highs in the stock market when people don t feel it on main street? and they re right. here s the thing. stocks measure the corporate success of the companies who make up those stock market averages. right? the companies within those indices. those companies, s&p 500 companies, for example, get, i think, 45% of their revenue from overseas. so it s a much more global picture. also, you ve seen money managers and investors have been telling us for months now that they feel as though the dysfunction in washington, that s something that wall street is starting to factor in. they ve got trillions of dollars on the sidelines in bank accounts. they re not necessarily hiring. they re not necessarily expanding. but they are, like, hoari ihoar cash and generating more profit with fe
