Cumbria set to appoint new chief

Cumbria CC is set to appoint Gill Steward as its new chief executive. If the move is approved at a full council meeting in June, she will take up the role in early August. Ms Steward is the current chair of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies thinktank. She was chief executive for Bexley LBC from 2016 to 2018 and interim chief executive of West Sussex CC between 2014 and 2016. She has a background in economic development, place and community services and was part of the executive team who oversaw the creation of Cornwall Council as a unitary authority. Ms Steward said she looked forward to building on the county’s “very successful reputation and the fantastic work of Katherine”.

A 50-year-old law should not determine the future of remote meetings

The answer is that they both hail from 1972. Whereas the Local Government Act 1972 – which brought about today’s structure of local government – remains largely in force, Pong has been superseded (to put it mildly). The arcade game, with its two white oblong bats, square ball and dotted line net on a plain black background, might be considered a retro design classic, but it is a world away from current video technology. Pong was, at the end of the day, an arcade game (albeit an influential one). However, over the past year digital technology has enabled much of the economy to continue functioning from people’s homes during Covid-19, prevented a recession of even greater magnitude and prevented countless unnecessary deaths. Its value has been unprecedented.

Exclusive: Racecourse, church and theatre proposed for council meetings

Exclusive: Racecourse, church and theatre proposed for council meetings A church, a theatre, a racecourse and a school hall have all been put forward as potential new venues to accommodate large numbers of councillors for socially distanced meetings when councils are set to return to face-to-face meetings next month. Councils are being pushed into considering drastic measures in order to ensure they can hold meetings that adhere to social distancing guidelines while also enabling all their councillors to attend. In some cases, specialist sound equipment is being sought to make sure members can be heard in large scale venues that were not designed for such occasions.

Lancashire rejects Morecambe Bay unitary proposal

Lancashire rejects Morecambe Bay unitary proposal Plans for Lancaster City Council to form a new unitary authority with two neighbouring authorities in Cumbria have been dealt a major setback after being turned down by Lancashire CC, which says it will only consider such a proposal in the future at the same time as reorganisation for the whole of the county. The ‘Morecambe Bay’ unitary proposal - which would see Lancaster merge with Barrow BC and South Lakeland DC in Cumbria – is one of four Cumbrian reorganisation proposals currently being consulted on, alongside other unitarisation plans being considered in North Yorkshire and Somerset.

Northern leaders express anger over vaccine diversion

Local leaders from across the North are furious that the vaccine supplies in their area will be cut by a third in February. To ensure all of those people in the top priority groups can be vaccinated quickly, targeted deliveries are being made to areas where there are more people left to vaccinate in the priority cohorts proportionate to the at risk population they have registered. Health Service Journal revealed earlier this week that by the second week of February the weekly supply will be reduced to 200,000  for Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and South Cumbria. Around 310,000 jabs were administered in the North West in the week to 24 January.
