Endangered species living in our own backyard: From longhorn beetles to riparian brush rabbits

Endangered species living in our own backyard: From longhorn beetles to riparian brush rabbits PERSPECTIVE The endangered valley elderberry longhorn beetle. The valley elderberry longhorn beetle is a rare sight these days along the banks of the Stanislaus River. It is arguably more elusive with than the riparian brush rabbit. If you have never heard of either, that’s because the removal of more than 90 percent riparian woodlands throughout much of the San Joaquin Valley over the past 150 years has taken them from once being as plentiful of the herds of Tule elk that roamed the valley that’s served as meals for the California Grizzly Bear that when standing on its hind legs  could stretch almost 10 feet and weighed upwards of 830 pounds.
