The curtain will finally rise on Moonlight Stage Productions long-delayed 40th anniversary season this summer when it returns to live and in-person entertainment in June with four Broadway musicals.
The season opens on June 16, a day after California s tiered Coronavirus reopening system is expected to end. The Moonlight is poised to respond to the ever-evolving health guidelines from the state and has measures in place including a socially distanced seating option, hand sanitizing stations placed throughout the theatre and daily cleaning of common areas. After waiting more than a year for guidance from the state of California on when and how they can reopen, live theaters finally received a detailed plan on Friday that goes into effect today.
The guidelines offered instructions on how theaters can immediately begin producing outdoor shows for a live audience. But the devil is in the details of the 18-page document. Only certain outdoor venues qualify for live performance under the guidelines. And under the maximum 20 percent capacity allowed under San Diego County’s current red-tier restriction, most professional theaters can’t afford to produce a show. Meanwhile, new COVID safety requirements released by Actor’s Equity, the labor union for theater actors, and the state’s AB 5 law for gig workers, may make it prohibitively expensive to hire performers.

Like many San Diego theater artists, designer Ron Logan saw a good portion of his work dry up when the pandemic arrived in March.
Logan has designed scenery and graphics for theaters throughout San Diego, including his best-known work: the bug-eyed, crazy-haired theater fan logo for the San Diego International Fringe Festival.
