WEDC investment helps fund remodel of the Wooden Shoe
MADISON, WI. MAY 7, 2021 The Village of Lena received a $110,000 state grant to assist in expanding the Wooden Shoe Bar & Grill located in downtown Lena.
The Community Development Investment (CDI) Grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) supported the village’s plans to increase the capacity of the Wooden Shoe to capture more events and grow the restaurant’s catering business.
“One of the top priorities of WEDC is to promote substantive local development by helping communities enhance their downtown areas and establish firm foundations for ongoing economic growth,” said
Missy Hughes, secretary and CEO of WEDC. “This project will make a real difference in the Village of Lena by supporting a valuable business in the community and encouraging future investment.”
The Bismarck City Commission tabled discussion on how to fund new public health and police department buildings until the board s next meeting after two failed votes Tuesday.
Commissioners also approved a new slogan and logo for the city, and honored this year s Humanitarian Award winners.
Commissioners have been trying to determine a path forward to finance two new buildings for city departments. The city sold the public health department building in 2019, and the department is now leasing its space in the same location. The police department s building is about 40 years old with limited parking.
The public works building also will undergo some expansion as part of the city s plan to address space needs, but the cost for that project has already been included in utility fees.
The Bismarck City Commission on Tuesday decided to look into giving financial breaks to certain pandemic-impacted businesses.
Meanwhile, bars and restaurants were allowed to resume staying open past 10 p.m. beginning Tuesday under a change announced Monday by Gov. Doug Burgum, and local bar owners and employees were looking forward to the extra hours.
Commissioners discussed financial relief options after bars and restaurants reached out to city staff. Commissioners held off on making any decisions Tuesday, instead deciding to form a stakeholder group to come up with solutions for the hospitality industry s financial woes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Fargo City Commission voted Dec. 14 to freeze utilities for bars and restaurants in that city for the first six months of next year and to rebate 2021 liquor license fees.
