Its the top of the hour. Steve, if you could, please stand by. We want to reset for our viewers here in the United States and around the world. The situation we continue to monitor in ferguson, missouri. Youre looking at live pictures there of police in position. They have used smoke, we understand, just a few minutes ago, and it seems they are continuing to do that. To disperse the crowds. Heres the timeline. Just about an hour ago this curfew went into effect. We have live pictures from many different angles and it seemed for the time that things remained peaceful. Then about 20, 25 minutes into the curfew our reporter Steve Kastenbaum, who remains on the phone with us, steve told us that there was a confrontation between a group of protesters, maybe 100, 200 protesters and police. We saw from our live pictures police started to advance. Then they started to use smoke to disperse the crowds, donning their masks. We have seen from affiliate video that even some protesters had gas mask
Apar to get the last few to disperse was a lot better than going in with basically armed troops. Did you see anybody hurt . I did not see anybody hurt. I wasnt that close, i guess to see if anyone was hurt. How many people were in the final group of protesters . Maybe 50, 60. And a report someone was shot. You have not seen any injuries . I have seen something on twitter was there tear gas fired . I heard that too. It definitely burned when it was shot into the crowd. I was already in my car with the windows up. I know where to be. But she got a bit of it and i opened the door and she jumped in and her eyes were burning. I dont know if that is was the smoke or what. Can you describe the tension in the midst of that . I mean, we worked we worked very hard on that group all day long. And you know, folks from the nation of islam and Community Leaders and religious leaders, we spent time with that group and there was no convincing them. They wanted to be out here. If they wanted to be arre

Stephanie elam is on the ground and can bring us up to date on whats happening. Just to let you know, the reason were broadcasting to you in the dark, is because the police could not see with our light on, were here, but it was it got very tense when people stopped walking in a circle and a water bottle was thrown and that let go of all the tension we felt out here. People started running, we started seeing military people, like this van almost coming down the street this way, more Water Bottles were thrown, more people started running back this way, and now were in the middle of it, theres people around us now trying to go between the police as you can see, are lined up behind us, there are dogs out here as well, people have their gas masks on. You can see im holding mine, because we dont know how far this is going to go right now, the tension just broke rig
Tells cnn that kidnapped journalist james foley was among those to be freed but the Mission Failed because the captive was not at the location indicated by intelligence. Now, the revelation comes a day after news that isis beheaded foley as a warning to the u. S. To stop its air strikes against isis fighters in iraq. For some insight on the dangers of the mission, last hour i spoke with cnn security analyst bob baer. I cant emphasize enough how risky this was. The syrians have missiles, the same one that took down the malay airplane and still have their radar up and theyre battle trained at this point. The problem is for this group that went in is they were basing the intelligence almost certainly on intercepts. They are unreliable. On top of it, theyve been moving the hostages around. This could not have been an easy mission, and i think its lucky that the teams got out with no loss of life. U. S. President Barack Obama Says foleys murder shocks the conscience of the entire world.
