Photo provided by Brad Bates Advertisement SHELBY TOWNSHIP Due to the coronavirus outbreak, many things were put on hold including the new Shelby Township Library’s tentative open date, which has now been pushed back to early 2022. Early estimates for the completion of the new library were planned to be in the spring of 2021. The township announced the revised schedule in April. While delays associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed the date of opening back, the township reported that construction is progressing and the project is still within budget.

And it also signified a year of change for Sterling Heights’ Velocity Center, a collaboration center that assists rising companies and bills itself on its website as Macomb County’s “premier technological technology hub.” Velocity, which is located along 18 Mile Road, between Mound Road and Van Dyke Avenue, is now “powered by” Alchemist Ventures LLC. The company’s founder and CEO, Patrick Wearn, said the company recently won the entrepreneurial services contract for the Velocity Center, adding that it’s good for at least one year.

But Sterling Heights officials and community leaders recently shared some silver linings to the year that might otherwise be overlooked.
