Senior police officer commits suicide

Graphic Online BY: Benjamin Xornam Glover 705 A senior police officer has allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at Borteyman, near Ashaiman, in the Greater Accra Region on St Valentine’s Day. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Divine Asiam was with the Legal and Prosecutions Unit of the Ghana Police Service until he allegedly shot himself in his room at Borteyman yesterday. The Tema Regional Police Command confirmed the incident via a statement by the command’s acting Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Stella Dede Dzakpasu, indicating that investigations had commenced to uncover events leading to the death of DSP Asiam.

Ghana police service must quickly look into possible causes of suicide among its officers

+ Losing three of its officers within three weeks, not to covid-19 but suspected suicide calls for some sense of urgency to be attached to investigations into those deaths and possible remedies found to the situation. On January 30, 2020, the Half Assini District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police (SP) Cyprain Zenge died in circumstances suspected to be a suicide. Reports suggested that the senior officer shot himself in the head, leaving behind a note which read: “I am fed up in this world.” A statement from the Western Regional Police Command confirmed the demise of the Police Commander, saying: “ Although preliminary investigation points to suicide, the investigation is opened to unravel the true circumstances leading to the death of the officer.”

705 The Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Barima Tweneboah Sasraku II, has entreated chiefs to endeavour to resolve land disputes in the region. He said disputes over land had become a major source of conflict in the area, which the commander said was undermining the development of the region. Barima Sasraku, who is the Chief of Jukwa-Mfuom and Adontenhene of the Abuakwa Nifa Division of Denkyira in the Central Region, said it was important for chiefs to use their time-tested traditional conflict resolution mechanisms to end all unresolved conflicts to pave way for continued development. Failure To Wear Face Masks: Over 200 People Arrested In Tema, Cape Coast

  The Tema Regional Police have arrested 105 suspects for flouting the government s directives on the wearing of face masks as a preventive measure against the spread of COVID-19. The arrest was carried out in a four-hour operation by the police last Wednesday, around Tema Community One, to enforce the directives on the observation of the COVID-19 protocols. The acting Public Relations Officer of the Tema Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Stella Dede Dzakpasu, told journalists that the suspects were going about their usual businesses regardless of the directives. Breakdown She said of the total number of people arrested, nine were women while 96 were men, all within the age bracket of 17 to 64 years.
