today sworn in as the nation s 116th justice, and the first black woman ever to serve on the high court. her husband, dr. patrick jackson held two bibles on which she swore a family bible, and the court s harlan bible. a court federal appeals judge, jackson replaced justice stephen breyer, who stepped down today after three decades on the bench, justice breyer hired ketanji brown jackson as a clerk in 1999, making it a full circle moment when he administered the judicial oath to her today. a formal investiture for justice jackson is expected in the fall we can call her that now, justice jackson. taking her oath today allows her to begin her judicial duties. she arrives on the bench in the wake of several hugely polarizing decisions, issued by the court on abortion, gun rights, and today s ruling limiting the epa s authority to fight climate change. we are going to have much more on that ruling specifically, and on the future of the court, and its newest member just ahead. b
outside the supreme court our own kevin corke is with us. what is going on? it s interesting. if you had been here earlier in the day you would ve seen a bear of a different crowd, we are talking about primarily female, mostly female, mostly young, very peaceful. but as is often the case in circumstances like this, as the day goes on the crowd begins to change just a bit. more young men show up, more people in tactical gear and masks and dark glasses, shades and that sort of thing. a change in tone of what you are seeing. but thus far all day long, it has been peaceful. and we expect it to stay that way, hopefully, because there is a rather large law enforcement presence along the fence line, at least about 60 that we ve seen. uniformed officers. there are more officers within the crowd. we are hoping for the best but so far we have seen a lot of people, passion, some prayer and mostly peaceful protesting. we will keep an eye on it but back to you. sean: any word on wheth

you were raised on a ranch in remote arizona. i was. you described yourself as a cowgirl. well, i was. i grew up on this remote cattle ranch that was half in arizona and half in new mexico. we weren t near any town. and so our little community consisted of my parents and me and about six cowboys. and we all lived, basically, in the same place and tried to run the ranch. we had cattle and we also raised enough horses to do the work on the ranch. and that was my life. so you were a very practical girl? i think so, because we had to solve all the problems ourselves. if something broke down or you had a problem, you couldn t turn to the yellow pages and call a repair person for help. you had to fix it yourself. and would you say that you brought that sort of common sense, that practicality, to your long career in the law and in public service? perhaps a bit. and my parents were very independent in the sense that they thought the best government was the government closest to them
