the prosecution case fell apart, a plea deal was struck, rambold s 15-year sentence suspended, put on probation but didn t live up to it. yellow stone prosecutors want to put him away for 30 years and instead he got 30 days. outrage over the sentence taking social media by storm, at least three petitions urging the removal of judge baugh are soliciting signatures. this one was started by protesters in billings, montana. this afternoon, hundreds of protesters are expected to gather at billings courthouse, they want judge baugh to resign and the state s attorney general to get the ruling reversed. the attorney general s office says it s reviewing the case. miguel marquez, cnn, los angeles. and joining us now is the mother of that teenaged girl, alliyah is joining me. thank you for being here this morning. i m so sorry for your loss.
miss hanlon, i can t imagine what you re going through right now. our condolences go out to you and your family. your daughter shareece was raped. we know she later took her own life and that her teacher, stacy rambold only got a month in prison. what went through your mind when you heard his sentence? i was horrified. horrified. there were no words so i had to leave. left the courtroom. i want to know what shocked us was the judge defended his sentence saying that your daughter seemed, in his words, older than her chronological age and was in as much of control of the situation as the teacher. and we just received new words from the judge explaining those remarks. would you listen to this for just a moment if you would.
sentence for rape. tonight there are new developments regarding a montana judge s decision to sentence a former teacher to a month in prison for raping his 14-year-old student who later killed herself. it s a story that we ve been following and now prosecutors say they re planning a potential appeal that could put this former teacher behind bars for much longer than 30 days. our kyung lah is outfront with these new details. reporter: outrage spilled on to the front lawn of the yellowstone county courthouse, 500 women demanding a resignation saying it s time for t the 71-year-old judge to go. outrage based on the judge s decision in the case of former high school teacher stacy rambold who received what amounted to a 30-day sentence for raping his 14-year-old student. this is a yellowstone county
justice system, shareece, just shy of her 17th birthday, committed suicide. with the victim dead prosecutors struck this deal with rambold. confess to one rape, stay away from children and they would dismiss the charges. ramboldfaced the judge this week because he violated that deal. yet the judge only gave him 31 days minus one day served in jail. why? in court, the judge said sha reese morales seemed older than her chronological age. later he told cnn that was not the best choice of words adding it was not a violent rape like in the movies but was a rape and should not have happened. as far as rambold he will be a free man in less than 30 days. and outfront is the mother.
