Facility master plan for St. Charles schools taking shape

Updated 1/27/2021 6:30 PM Creating equitable spaces among the schools in St. Charles Unit District 303 was a common theme in a report unveiled by the committee tasked with developing the district s first facility master plan in 13 years. The Findings and Needs update presented to school board members at Monday s business services meeting was based on recommendations and committee tours of eight district schools. A team comprised of parents, students, staff and community members created a vast list of needs based on the condition of learning and community spaces as well as the physical condition of the campuses.   We realize this is your first opportunity to see this information, District 303 Superintendent Jason Pearson said of the committee update. $3.6 million flood project slated along 7th Avenue Creek in St. Charles

Updated 1/26/2021 5:34 PM After decades of flooding that s plagued residents along the 7th Avenue Creek in St. Charles, the city s aldermen unanimously approved allocating $3.6 million for the first phase of a construction project in the area just south of Main Street. The contract for Phase 1, which came in about $400,000 under budget, was awarded on Monday to Martam Construction. Because of three grants totaling $1.7 million, the cost to the city will end up being about $1.9 million.   Martam hopes to begin construction in February, weather permitting, and finish the bulk of the work by the end of October. I am so excited that this project is happening, Ward 5 Alderman Maureen Lewis said during Monday s Government Services Committee meeting. It s been in the making for several years here. While each board member has the right to express his or her thoughts, opinions and experiences, as Ms. Waibel did that evening, comments on behalf of the school board only come from the board president, Manheim wrote in a statement released Tuesday.

St. Charles' new sensory garden will be a place for everyone

Posted1/15/2021 6:00 AM The St. Charles Park District may have to hold off on allowing a bunch of children at the same time into a new sensory garden and inclusive playground area until after the pandemic has subsided, but in the meantime it will still be a safe outdoor option with rules in place. As such, park district officials can look forward to this spring with a sense of excitement. They ll have their calendars marked for Memorial Day weekend, targeting those days for a grand opening and ribbon cutting of the new sensory garden and inclusive playground currently under construction at Pottawatomie Park.
