Eric Parry Architects’ proposals for a £170m judicial complex in the City of London were approved today.
The City Corporation’s planning committee approved the scheme despite uproar over the proposed loss of historic buildings including cherished facades on Fleet Street, London’s famous newspaper district.
The development, which will replace an entire city block in a conservation area between Whitefriars Street and Salisbury Court on the south side of Fleet Street, will include a new headquarters for City of London Police, a courts complex and a commercial building to help fund the project.

Former prime minister Kevin Rudd says the “Fox News-isation” of Australian media threatens to further encourage far-right extremism.
He delivered the warning on Friday during a Senate inquiry examining media diversity in Australia.
Mr Rudd has directly targeted the role of Rupert Murdoch s media empire in the Australian media landscape, claiming its conflation of news reporting and editorial opinion has undermined democracy.
Mr Rudd appears before the committee.

Mr Rudd said he was worried this trend threatens to build an alternative political ecosystem that could act to further encourage far-right extremism. Where I really worry about the cancer setting in is this - this conflation of news reporting and opinion . ultimately corrodes the notion of factual analysis in itself, he said.

An Angus manse with fascinating links to a leading light in the international expansion of the Salvation Army has come to market.
Historic Wesley House in Arbroath’s Ponderlaw Street was commissioned in 1772 by clergyman John Wesley, a leading figure in the Methodist movement within the Church of England.
It was built at the same time as the adjacent Methodist church and was originally the minister’s home.
