The toll on events across the North caused by the latest cluster of Covid-19 cases in Auckland continues to mount.
Major commemorations had also been due to take place this Sunday to mark the 176th anniversary of the Battle of Ōhaeawai and the 150th anniversary of St Michael s Church, built by Māori on the site of the pā as a memorial to British war dead.

Paid lifeguards have stopped patrolling Northland s surf beaches during the week, including Ocean Beach, above. But volunteers will still be on patrol at weekends until Easter.

Weekday patrols by surf lifeguards at Northland s patrolled beaches have finished after the paid lifeguard season ended.
However, weekend patrols with volunteer lifeguards will still continue until Easter at the beaches - Ruakākā, Waipū Cove, Mangawhai Heads, Ocean Beach, Whangārei Heads and Ahipara.

Coastguard s Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade Campaign is coming to Waikato and Coromandel as part of a nationwide mission to remove as many ill-fitting, damaged and old lifejackets from circulation as possible.
From mid-December until the end of the month, residents can trade in their old lifejackets for a discount on a range of new and fit-for-purpose Hutchwilco lifejackets.
Over the past seven years more than 15,000 boaties have used the scheme.
