rebecca, a test when congress returns from the recess will be the money. of course, the financial response, there will be tens of billions of dollars needed to rebuild here and certainly there will be a request for a relief package. that wound up in all the other requests. you got a shutdown threat from the president over the wall, spending measures, et cetera. how is that all going to interplay? because even without harvey, it was already going to be a challenge. well, the president s plate is going to be full in terms of the legislative tasks ahead. this is just one of the many things congress will need to address when they return at the beginning of next month. but what the president has working in his favor, first of all, is that republicans control congress and this is a feel-good kind of measure that they could all pass and tout as a big success of this congress and this administration. and it also helps, this is a little bit cynical in the weeds politics talk, but john corny
president at this point, a republican president who goes after jeff flake, who goes, in some ways, after john mccain. of course, he s suffering from cancer, so it s, in some ways, it feels like this is something that donald trump needs more than the base actually needs. he s the one who needs that good feeling and the cheering base and to be and to sort of feel the love in that room. the president, i think, more than anything, is motivated by that feeling of admiration, of approval, and wanting to be liked. at least we heard him call out dean heller by name and said, you know, thank you for hopping on a flight to make sure you get here. but rich, here s my overarching question on republicans. they re all on the same team. the president s the captain of the republican team and yet you think of what they have to do in congress when they all come back. you know, approve new spending measures, raise the debt ceiling, rewrite the federal tax code, infrastructure, and if you listen to th
the future bills. one thing that i do think can be rolling and any future administration is taking it across the state border. i think if they do that it sounds almost republican. music to my ears. there are a lot of people that really do care about that. and even the other pieces, being able to stay with your parents insurance till 26, the pre-existing things that he would keep. if he keeps those and finds a way to keep costs down, and i think republicans are sort of fighting with themselves about spending measures, but if he can keep cost down s, then he can build traction. jon: they have had republicans, seven years to come up with a replacement, do they have one? well, the democrats have a taunt. there is some merit. the g.o.p. is like the dog that caught the car. now what? this they bear in mind,
meant when he told them to pass a bill. they need to fairly consider and debate a bill and not end the spending measures. that s a major point, jimmy, that this is a spending measure. it s not a bill that has been debated. they snuck this thing in which adds salt in the wound. but at the end of the day, and i know we all love the fireworks and want to stand up. is there any merit to having the fear that when the republicans gain more strength in january, jimmy, we could end up with worse? is there any merit to that? bet on it, buddy. do you actually think that this republican congress and the republican what is the first vote that mitch mcconnell has announced that he s going to hand down when the republicans take the senate in january? a vote to repeal obamacare. how many times did they do it in the last congress and the house? 50 times. do you think they re going to do it in the house again? bet on it. if this white house, which i
they re choosing not to. they don t want to do the work which is hard, which is negotiate with the president. you have to negotiate. the idea of punishing the president over his executive action is censure. number one, i think we should censure the president of the united states. i think it s unfortunate that he did this. could be a censure for the president of the united states. that s not happened in more than a century and that would be at least a direct message to the president. there are, as the piece mentioned, spending measures. the president can be censured. he can be sued by the congress. bill, are they for real? these are options that are not real option s.
