support from republicans, and a lot of republicans who said nothing. is it a bigger break than that even. voices in 1986 and for years after 1986 pleading with americans to rethink that law. but there wasn t much room for them in either party. modern republican party was built on being tougher than the liberal softies on the other side. democrats became obsessed with disproving that claim. it s where stiff mandatory sentenci sentencing, three strikes and you re out, where the incarceration of more than 2.4 million americans, it s where it all comes from. the question is whether we ve reached a new place, whether the tougher on crime imperative that drove both parties for a generation is giving way to a new consensus, one that doesn t automatically assume that the most punitive response is the best response. one that leaves room for what eric holder called common sense. have the politics of crime changed and have they changed for good? i want to ask my panel. i m here with eleanor cliff
americans go to too many prisons for far too long for truly no good law enforcement reason. it s clear at a very basic level, the 20th century criminal justice solutions are not adequate to overcome our 21st century challenges. again, it is well past time to implement common sense changes that will foster safer communities from coast to coast. the main common sense change that holder announced in that speech is an order to federal prosecutors not to specify the quantity of drugs found on certain nonviolent offenders. in other words, to stop triggering harsh automatic sentences spelled out in the anti-drug abuse act of 1986 for low-level offenders. some of the reaction to holder s speech wasn t that surprising. you re telling me these thugs on the street deserve our pity, our slack? you re telling me that? there was also this after
scandals as phony and over. arguing mainly to the washington press corp, trying to make that case. part two, the president as the serious negotiator, somebody that wants to give, the republicans are the ones that never want to talk about compromise. the problem the white house runs into on this particular proposal, it was recognized pretty early in the process, midday today, even by friendly reporters to the white house that this was just a nonplan, phony plan. it is repackaged old stuff. it is what i used to do when i forgot to get my brother or sister a birthday present, and you go back, find your soccer ball and maybe a book and board game, you wrap it all up, make a big presentation that this is what i m giving you. there s nothing really there. on another topic, the president, a new line, maybe a lot of the speech wasn t new but
of romney world. they have the the most insensitive approach to everything. the physical imagery they were conjuring up of this man in the oval office being grabbed by the collar and literally thrown out into a street, that is the image that he tried to get that hall to just cheer along to. luckily he was speaking earlier enough in the night you know it is like in those halls, completely ignoring everybody at the podium until they get to prime time. i m glad that that speech wasn t featured in a way he could really get the crowd going over that. very ugly imagery of grabbing this president and throwing him out physically. it is always dangerous let me judgment in. i was sitting next to ed schultz and that was the remarks ed was making. i thought this was the speech sounded like a joke was about to start. guy walks into a bar. you reacted to this as this is the speech of a bouncer. bar bouncer.
