Tri-County EMC to Expand Broadband in Rural Middle Georgia ; Tri-County EMC announces plans to expand broadband to 22,000 members across eight counties March 5, 2021 Atlanta, GA – Efforts to provide needed broadband service to Georgians took a step forward when Gov. Brian Kemp and PSC Commissioner Tim Echols made an announcement at Tri-County EMC’s headquarters earlier today. Gov. Kemp announced the formation of a new broadband provider in Middle Georgia, Tri-CoGo, which will provide high-speed internet service to 22,000 homes and businesses in eight Counties: Jones, Baldwin, Putnam, Jasper, Twiggs, Wilkinson, Morgan and Bibb. This project will include a capital investment of more than $47 million by Tri-County EMC (TCEMC) to build a fiber network that will provide enhanced reliability and operational services for TCEMC electric customers while providing excess fiber capacity that will be leased to the cooperative’s broadband affiliate, Tri-CoGo, which will provide the broa

Jones: Working to expand broadband in state

This week, I had the honor of joining Gov. Brian Kemp for the partnership announcement between Southern Rivers Energy from Barnesville, Georgia, and Central Georgia EMC, located in Jackson, in Senate District 25. By joining together, these two companies will provide high-speed internet in 18 Middle Georgia counties to 80,000 homes and businesses. According to the statement released by the governor, “The partnership includes a capital investment of more than $210 million overall. Central Georgia EMC will invest $135 million, Southern Rivers Energy (SRE) will invest $53 million, and Conexon will contribute $21.5 million. Monroe County has also committed $1.3 million in local funds to incentivize the EMCs to start their projects in Monroe County.”

David Wynn and his wife, Sherri, moved from Bibb County to Monroe County in 2016, not knowing that internet access would be a problem.  After seeing that few internet providers were available, they purchased a hotspot hoping that would fix their problem.  It s hit-and-miss. It s certainly not reliable and it certainly doesn t give the speed that we really need, David said. This became an even bigger problem once the pandemic began. David started working from home and so did Sherri, who is a school teacher.

Central Georgia EMC Customers could get internet access as soon as this summer. Governor Brian Kemp announced Monday that Central Georgia EMC and Southern Rivers Energy will partner with Conexon to provide high speed internet to 80,000 homes and businesses in 18 Middle Georgia counties. “This announcement represents the best of rural Georgia and what can happen here in the Peach state,” Governor Kemp said. “EMCs, private partners and community leaders working together on creative solutions to close the gap of those with internet service and those without.”
